ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF NUTRITIONAL SCIENCE Department of Nutrition, University of California, Davis

The appointment includes teaching, research, outreach and service responsibilities, and is located in the Department of Nutrition in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. This is an academic year (9-month) tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor position which includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (http://caes.ucdavis.edu/research/agexpstn).

The Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis is internationally recognized for its leadership in achieving the mission of advancing nutritional biology and translation to human health through research, education and outreach. Faculty and Specialists in the department study mechanisms and effects of foods and food components on health and disease risk with a focus on cellular and whole organism metabolism, models of obesity and age-related diseases, and developmental and life-span nutrition. The research addresses highly relevant societal issues through implementation and evaluation of nutrient and food-based interventions and their impact on individuals, society and public health; policy implications of these interventions; examining nutritional status of diverse populations; clinical biomarkers of health and disease; and nutrition education in schools, communities and food assistance programs. The department is committed to extending science-based information to the public through local, state, national and international channels.

The appointee will have access to wide-ranging infrastructure resources and many collaborative opportunities within the department and college, and with colleagues in campus units such as the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Veterinary Medicine, California National Primate Research Center and College of Biological Sciences.

Responsibilities: The Department of Nutrition is seeking applicants who focus on integrative approaches to understanding the role of nutrition in health, development and chronic disease. Candidates should be able to work in multidisciplinary teams utilizing basic science tools in research involving human nutrition trials to study health at the individual and population level. This position will build upon the signature strengths of the department including international and community nutrition interventions, micronutrient and bioactive food component metabolism, and maternal/child nutrition. The appointee will be expected to pursue understanding of metabolic phenotypes and underlying biologic mechanisms in order to optimize translation of nutrition recommendations for individuals and public policy.

The appointee will be responsible for teaching an undergraduate course in the core curriculum for the two majors offered by the Department (Nutrition Science and Clinical Nutrition), as well as other courses assigned by the department chair to meet the teaching needs of the departmental curricula. Mentoring of graduate students, undergraduate student advising, curricular development, participation in and development of outreach programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. The appointee is expected to conduct fundamental research, train students, and provide outreach that will further the mission of the department and the University of California. Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Nutrition, Biology, Medicine, Public Health or related fields; post-doctoral experience preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. Research interests and strong skills in application of cutting edge nutrition research techniques and relevant experience in human intervention research preferred. The candidate should have the ability to work in and lead interdisciplinary collaborative teams utilizing mechanistic and translational approaches to understand issues of individual and global importance, including prevention and consequences of both under and over nutrition. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in nutrition.

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the Assistant/Associate Professor rank at the University of California.
