DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran should wean itself off sales of its vast oil resources to power its economy, the country's clerical supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, as its crude exports become increasingly hampered by Western sanctions.
Revenues from crude oil sales supply about half of Iran's national budget and make up about 80 percent of its foreign exports, but the Islamic Republic is struggling to find buyers for its crude, with top Asian consumers cutting purchases as Western sanctions choke off business.
Separately, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad acknowledged the "difficult conditions" Iran faced as a result of international sanctions levied against Tehran's disputed nuclear program, and urged the government to save money to deal with the problem.
"Crude (oil) sales are a trap which we inherited from the years before the (1979 Islamic) Revolution," Khamenei said to a gathering of researchers and scientists on Sunday evening, in comments published on his official website.
"Unfortunately, the country has been stuck and efforts must be made so that the people of Iran are freed from that trap."
Khamenei said it was important the country reach a point where it could easily shut down its oil wells and stop selling crude products, according to the published statement.
"It is possible to reach these conditions by relying on science and the knowledge base," Khamenei said, without elaborating further.
Ahmadinejad used windfall earnings from record oil prices in 2008 to go on an import spending spree, which critics said hurt domestic industries and caused a spike in inflation.
Iran's exports have declined steadily this year from the 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd) average in 2011, as its oil buyers cut imports to comply with U.S. and European Union sanctions aimed at forcing Tehran to give up its nuclear program.
Since the sanctions were tightened early this year, Iran's currency has flagged and prices for basic goods have soared.
In a meeting with legislators on Sunday evening, Ahmadinejad said the country's leaders must work "hand in hand" to exit the current crisis, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), saying the legislative and executive branches should look for areas to save costs.
"Everyone should accompany the government by cutting costs and transforming stagnant property into productive assets," Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying.
Ahmadinejad, now in his final year as president, has faced intense criticism of his economic policies from conservative rivals in the parliament.
"The enemy is putting great pressures on the country and has fostered difficult conditions," Ahmadinejad said, according to IRNA. "But this is where we must once and for all make the enemy disappointed and regretful of its approach and actions."
Khamenei and other Iranian officials have acknowledged the sanctions' bite, but have urged the adoption of a "resistance economy" in response to the crisis, emphasizing greater reliance on domestic producers rather than imports, though they have yet to present a detailed plan on how to do so.

MEXICO CITY (CBS SF/AP) ? Metallica vocalist James Hetfield had warned things could get perilous at the start of the band?s fifth tour of Mexico, saying ?We?re very focused on how dangerous this show is.?
The audience of more than 22,000 believed it too. Many of the fans were visibly terrified Saturday night as the band re-enacted its burn-down-the-stage performance from 1998?s ?Cunning Stunts? video album.
At one point a technician fled across the stage like a human torch in a Mexico City show that featured explosions, pyrotechnics, laser lights and the odd giant coffin.
Hours earlier Hetfield said the tour would cover the band?s 31 years of performing.
Metallica has scheduled seven more shows at Mexico City?s Sports Palace before heading to dates in Edmonton, Canada and next week at San Francisco?s Golden Gate Park for Outside Lands show.

All I can say - I AGREE!?
The decision to have children young ( and add to it the fact of not being sure if marriage and family were in the plans at all for the next decade if not longer) was a bit intimidating. Scary sometimes. The typical suggestion given to me was " just wait... not now... you are still young".?
Yet.
Having children YOUNG is the best thing - I believe - one can do to be a successful dancer.?
It is true that you need to want both. It is also true that it is a 24 hour job, sometimes feels like 30 hour job in a 24 hour time period. ( but then when ballet is not? I remember dreaming about what I do and working on turn out while eating dinner long before I had children. You just never stop )?
?But it is the best decision I've ever made.?
I watched dancers that perfected their careers without families. I watched dancers that perfected their careers while juggling motherhood. Both can be done.?
I found that going through the motions of motherhood opens a channel that one did not know existed. It is difficult to describe in words. There aren't any.?
It is also a fact that daring comes with younger age.
Having gone through the experience of motherhood at young age - in my mid 20s was when I had my first child -? I am not sure I would repeat the same a decade later. As I grow older , I am not sure I grow wiser, but I do know that my fears of "what if" grow at a fast speed. I can see - completely -? how , when talking to many dancers that are my age now - they are fearful of what pregnancy may bring, what it can do and what it can ruin for them. Being in your 30s is a wonderful time - so far best ever , as you lived long enough to have enough achievements to look at - but at the same time there are plentiful of opportunities to not want to put your life on pause. I wouldn't want to, had I not known different. Had I not known that you don't have to.?
There are many things I could talk about forever. And it would take, probably, a book to describe all my thoughts of going through experience of motherhood while dancing professionally...With four children... ( i can't believe it still. Four? from ME?! I must be crazy. Except that I am SO. HAPPY)?
So, here I'd like to summarize to this:
To each its own time. There is no right or wrong to when one needs - if even so - to have a marriage and/or a family. But if there is a desire to... A longing in the heart, a dream...?
Then do NOT wait. Go for it. You will be happy that you did. There are no words to describe the happiness of motherhood. And there are no words to describe the feeling when little warm and squishy hands give you flowers and tightly hug your neck after the concert. No words to describe the extra boost of energy you get when you think of those warm cheeks and happy eyes that will greet you when you are done. No words to describe what it can compare to , because it can't.
It's worth the double work hours.
Every minute of it.

Baton Rouge -- A total of 18,573 plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the state-run property insurance company should get at least $3,000 each when the claims are paid this year or in early 2013, lawyers for the group said Tuesday. Fred Herman, one of the attorneys representing the plaintiffs who alleged that Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corp. did not properly follow its claims policy after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, said approximately $105 million for the payments was turned over to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office late Monday.
The next step will be a hearing on how the money will be paid out and how much the attorneys' fees and other legal costs will run. Herman said that the plaintiffs in the lawsuit could get paid between November and January.
Herman said 24th Judicial District Court Judge Henry Sullivan in Gretna, who has handled the case since it was filed in 2006, has a status conference with the lawyers scheduled for Aug. 3 to start working through the details of the cash distribution.
"There is no way it can be stopped at this point now," Herman said of the long-delayed payout to the members of the class-action lawsuit titled Geraldine Oubre et al. vs. Louisiana Citizens Fair Plan. "This is the final chapter in this part of the saga."
Herman said "several thousand" other claimants may also be involved in a separate award.
"As far as we are concerned they have come to the end of the road," said Wiley Beevers, another attorney in the class-action litigation. "Citizens has exhausted all legal remedies."
Richard Robertson, president and chief executive officer of Citizens, agreed. "The money is already gone" from the Citizens bank account at Regions Bank, he said.
Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon said, "It is in their account. It is all over."
Herman said that award to the plaintiffs could be up to $4,000 each based on how much Sullivan awards to the lawyers for their fees. Based on past procedures, attorneys representing the class could get 25 percent to 40 percent of the award, he said.
Citizens has battled paying the claims for years, alleging that Sullivan granted the judgment without giving the state-run insurer of last resort a proper hearing and due process. The case at one point wound up before the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused to grant relief.
Sullivan originally awarded a judgment of $92.86 million to the members of the class action in 2009 but that has grown by $10,000 a day in interest since.
Herman said the approximately $105 million was turned over shortly after the state Supreme Court refused to delay the payments in a lawsuit that Citizens filed against Regions Bank, where the cash was held in an account.
The Baton Rouge-based 1st Circuit Court of Appeal took less than three hours Friday to deny Citizens' claim against Regions, setting up Monday's last-ditch appeal and rejection.
Robertson said that even with the award, Citizens "has more than adequate cash reserves to operate smoothly."
"We have a balance of $100 million to $110 million in cash reserves" but a large payout of claims from a storm this year "could put enormous pressure on the company."

Social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace have dominated the Internet as the most visited websites in the last seven or eight years, beating out information centric sites such as Wikipedia and the search engines Google and Yahoo.? As it turns out, people have attempted to connect with each other through computers since the very early days of personal computing.
Early Nineteen Seventies
The earliest social networks were in the form of bulletin boards.? These bulletin boards were not like our current Internet bulletin board systems like online product help forums and online topical forum sites.? The first computer bulletin board was set up in Leopold?s Records in Berkley California in 1972.? This electronic bulletin board was set up as a computer terminal that actually sat next to the community bulletin board within the record store.? Users would come in and hang flyers for the sale of their Volkswagen Bus on the corkboard and then type in their for sale advertisement into the ?Community Memory? machine, as they called it.? The Community Memory system hosted local advertisements, questions and advice concerning cost saving measures and requests for the best restaurants in the area.? While this computer system was not connected to a larger online network of computers, the central location of this system being located in a central community hub allowed Community Memory to connect several people in the Berkeley community.
The first example of online networked social networking came later in 1972 through a computer system called PLATO 4.? Plato, Programmed Logic for Automated Teaching Operations, released its version 4 with the ability to allow students to talk with each other via an online message board.? Later the next year, in 1973, Plato 4 released the first online chat application.
In 1976, two students of Kansas University developed an online message board system for the university campus members to use.? This system called ?Honk? worked in a similar fashion to Berkeley?s ?Community Memory? application.? While users continued to use the system similar to how it used Community Manager, it worked on several Honeywell computers around the university, not just one single computer.
Late Seventies to Early Eighties
The late seventies saw several more advances to network technology as the personal computer gained in popularity among electronics hobbyists.? By the early eighties, Macintosh and Commodore computers were becoming more and more common amongst individual users as well as school and library community computer spaces.
1978 saw the creation of the world?s first dial up bulletin board program, called the Computerized Bulletin Board System (CBBS).? For the first time, individual users were able to use their personal computers in their homes and a network modem to dial up to a central computer hosting the CBBS and connect with each other.
CompuServe Information Services was introduced in 1979.? Beyond just a simple bulletin board system, CompuServe services resembled something closer to a full ISP service, offering news, shopping, reference material, electronic mail and database access.? CompuServe eventually became AOL in the nineties, and in many ways resembled then what an early AOL service featured before the turn of the century.
Usenet was first launched in 1980 and has been one of the Internet?s most frequented newsgroups since that time.? The newsgroups were arranged topically and covered a wide range of topics to movies to religion to politics.
American People/Link was introduced in 1984 as a competitor to CompuServe Information Services.? In 1985, American People/ Link marketed itself as an online dating service.?? Within the next few years, APL had close to 5000 registered users.

PARIS (AP) ? McDonald's workers in Paris who stopped a Canadian professor from wearing computerized eyeglasses feared he could be recording or photographing people in violation of their privacy, the company said Thursday.
Steve Mann, who designed a vision device similar to the enhanced reality glasses recently announced by Google, said he and his family were vacationing in Paris and stopped by the Champs Elysees McDonald's on July 1.
In his blog, Mann wrote that he showed McDonald's staff a note from his physician and accompanying documents about the glasses, but that three staff members knocked the device off his head and grabbed it.
"McDonald's was the only establishment that seemed to have any problem with my eyeglass during our entire 2 week trip," Mann wrote, describing the three employees as Perpetrators 1, 2 and 3. He said when the first staffer grabbed the glasses, he recorded images of the confrontation. But the lens was damaged, said Mann, a professor of computer engineering at the University of Toronto.
On its Facebook page, McDonald's France wrote that as part of its inquiry officials have spoken with Mann and the employees.
The staff said they were concerned about privacy violations when they approached Mann, according to the statement. McDonald's did not say if the staff members admitted knocking the glasses off Mann's head.
"According to the employees, the exchanges with Mr. Mann were respectful and polite," the company said. "Regarding the emotion this affair has generated, McDonald's asks that no one jump to conclusions before all the facts are known."
Mann has said he hopes the glasses will ultimately help the visually impaired. He did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday.

But?this isn?t just your normal DIY bride, she?s an event coordinator in the making. With the help of?Swan Lake Nurseryland?and a heart full of ideas, this couple created a flawless event.?If this were my backyard I would never leave, thankfully there are plenty of photos to lust over.
From the Bride? Alex and I met in 2006 through mutual friends in high school. After many months of double dates and flirting, in the summer of 2007, we began dating. The next few years were filled with post-secondary education, small trips and the tragic loss of my mother. Life had its ups and downs, but it kept going and so did we. I fell in love with weddings, and in 2009 decided to take an online part-time event management course at Mount Royal University in Alberta, and Alex began working towards his civil engineering degree in Kelowna. Alex moved to Kelowna and I stayed in Vernon, visiting on the weekends or when we could. In 2011, as school eventually slowed down, Alex got a position for his co-op in Vernon, and he moved home. We had discussed getting married many times, and it finally had become a reality. On Canada Day after the fireworks Alex ?surprised? me at the foot of my bed with a proposal, and I of course said YES! I was so excited to finally make it official and put all my creativity to use. Not wanting to wait until next summer, we decided to get married September 4th of Labor Day weekend, the last hooray before summer?s end. With only two quickly approaching months to plan our big day, I got to work quickly!
The planning process was my favourite, and I wanted my overall look for the wedding to be DIY, romantic, simple and soft. I had ideas for everything, and of course I wanted to do everything myself within two months. In other words, I was on a crazy mission to get it done. Choosing the venue was the easiest of part of the whole planning process and was much of what prompted us to get married that summer. I had spent most my life at our lake house, either traveling up for holidays as a kid or living there for my teenage years. This house held so many family memories, and I really couldn?t imagine a better place to get married. As for the decor, I wanted everything to reflect us and create an intimate setting for our guests. Most of the vintage decor was my parents? that they had collected over the years. With the help of all our family members, our day was shaping up perfectly. We also wanted our wedding to be affordable, so everything from the candy bar and the antique pie stands to the signs and centrepieces was homemade.
Our day had finally come, and we were surrounded by all of our favourite people and lucky to have a gorgeous, hot summer day. We chose to have our pictures done first as we wanted our ceremony to be followed by our reception. Everyone was carefree and thankful to be spending time with family and friends. It was so important to us to be able to cherish each moment of the day, and we were lucky to be able to visit with most of our guests. One of my favourite moments of the day was just after the ceremony when a train decided to pass on the tracks above our house. It was like it had known to hold off, and it had everyone laughing! The reception kicked off with a buffet, all made by our family, and was then followed by speeches and, finally, dancing on the end of the dock. Our wedding day was a true reflection of us as a couple and everything we could have asked for!
