WhatsApp founder says he doesn't want to hurt carriers, much
Given how much the world has already noticed that instant messaging can be cheaper than SMS, it's surprising to see the founder of WhatsApp trying to persuade carriers that he's actually doing them a favor. In an interview with Reuters, Brian Acton said that his messaging service is "facilitating a broad movement to data plans," from which carriers "stand to benefit quite substantially." While it's certainly true that smartphones and data plans make nice margins for operators, Acton's thesis also slithers around some slightly inconvenient evidence. According to analysts at Ovum, carriers lost $13.9 billion in SMS revenues last year, and are set to lose another $23 billion this year. All the while, WhatsApp's traffic is growing rapidly, with total messages doubling from one billion in October 2011 to two billion in February. With data costs falling around the world, and with platforms like WhatsApp running on lower-priced handsets (such as those running Nokia S40), it's the consumer, not the carrier, who ought to be charmed.

Eating cruciferous vegetables may improve breast cancer survival

ScienceDaily (Apr. 3, 2012) ? A study by Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention investigators reveals that breast cancer survivors who eat more cruciferous vegetables may have improved survival. The study of women in China was presented by postdoctoral fellow Sarah J. Nechuta, Ph.D., M.P.H., at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting in Chicago, Ill.

"Breast cancer survivors can follow the general nutritional guidelines of eating vegetables daily and may consider increasing intake of cruciferous vegetables, such as greens, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli, as part of a healthy diet," said Nechuta.

Nechuta, Xiao Ou Shu, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues investigated the role of cruciferous vegetables in breast cancer survival among women in the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study, a prospective study of 4,886 Chinese breast cancer survivors who were diagnosed with stage 1 to stage 4 breast cancer from 2002 to 2006. Shu, Ingram Professor of Cancer Research, is the principal investigator of the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study.

After adjusting for demographics, clinical characteristics and lifestyle factors, the researchers found cruciferous vegetable intake during the first 36 months after breast cancer diagnosis was associated with a reduced risk for total mortality, breast cancer-specific mortality and disease recurrence.

Survival rates were influenced by vegetable consumption in a dose-response pattern. As women ate more of these vegetables, their risk of death or cancer recurrence decreased.

Women who were in the highest quartiles of intake of vegetables per day had a 62 percent reduced risk of total mortality, 62 percent reduced risk of breast cancer mortality, and 35 percent reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence, compared to women with the lowest quartile of intake."

Nechuta noted that cruciferous vegetable consumption habits differ between China and the United States and suggested this fact be considered when generalizing these results to U.S. breast cancer survivors.

"Commonly consumed cruciferous vegetables in China include turnips, Chinese cabbage/bok choy and greens, while broccoli and Brussels sprouts are the more commonly consumed cruciferous vegetables in the United States and other Western countries," she said. "The amount of intake among Chinese women is also much higher than that of U.S. women."

Cruciferous vegetables contain phytochemicals known as isothiocyanates and indoles which appear to have a protective effect against some types of cancer.

Nechuta said the level of these bioactive compounds, proposed to play a role in the anticancer effects of cruciferous vegetables, depends on both the amount and type of cruciferous vegetables consumed.

She said there is a need for future studies that measure the bioactive compounds in these vegetables and the host factors that may influence the effects of these compounds to improve the understanding of the association between cruciferous vegetable consumption and breast cancer outcomes.

With LEGO, making synthetic bone is a snap

1 hr.

The process of making synthetic bone is, as you might imagine, fairly arduous. But the end result is undeniably useful; synthetic bone can be used in everything from medical implants to construction materials. Instead of doing the most laborious parts of the synthetic bone creation process themselves, scientists at Cambridge University have turned to LEGO kits.

In order to make synthetic bone, scientists have have to take a sample, dip it into a beaker filled with protein and calcium, rinse that in water, and dip it into another beaker containing protein and phosphate. This needs to be done repeatedly until a bone-like compound is built. That?s time-consuming. The Cambridge researchers decided to automate the process using a?LEGO Mindstorms?robotics kit.

For the uninitiated: Mindstorms is not the LEGO kit you played with at age 6. It?s a kit for slightly older kids (and adults), filled with motors, sensors and microprocessors. In this case, the researchers used the kit to build a crane. They attached the starting sample to the end of the crane and programmed it to dip the sample into the various solutions. Lo and behold, a synthetic bone-making Lego machine.

Now the Cambridge scientists can spend less time on the sample-dipping process and more time on their research, which aims to produce a synthetic material that has a low-energy cost and a high similarity to human bone tissue.

Personal Finance Tips That Everyone Needs To Know | Hiveapps.com

Read these tips to find out how to save enough money to accomplish your projects. Even if you do not earn much, being educated about finances could help you a lot. For instance, you could invest money or find out how to reduce your budget. Personal finances is all about education.

Coupons

Use coupons and discounts. Before you make a purchase, take time to search for coupons and discounts that you can use. This can be time consuming, but you can often find excellent deals and good-sized discounts that make the time worth it. Save money by looking for discounts and you?ll be happier with the purchase, too.

If money is tight and earning more is simply not a possibility, then spending less is the only way for you to get ahead. Bear in mind that saving just $40 a week by carpooling, cutting coupons and renegotiating or canceling unnecessary services is the equivalent of a $1 per hour raise.

A great way to save hundreds of dollars a month and thousands a year is to start clipping coupons from multiple locations. Saving $30 a week at the grocery store can really add up over the course of a year. That?s an extra $30 you can be using to pay down an insurance bill.

Coupons might have been taboo in years past, but with so many people trying to save money and with budgets being tight, why would you pay more than you have to? Scan your local newspapers and magazines for coupons on restaurants, groceries and entertainment that you would be interested in.

Apply these tips and you should be able to secure your future. Personal finances are especially important if you have a family or plan to retire soon. No one else is going to take care of you and your family better than yourself, even with all the help available from governments.

HBT: Ubaldo suspended 5 games for throwing at Tulo

Cleveland?s Ubaldo Jimenez was banned five games by the league Monday for intentionally throwing a pitch at Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on Sunday.

Jimenez was not ejected from Sunday?s game, even though it was obvious he meant to drill Tulowitzki. The benches cleared after the incident, though order was quickly restored. Tulo was taken for X-rays on a bruised left elbow, but they came back negative and he?s still expected to be ready for Opening Day.

Jimenez, who said he did no wrong, is likely to appeal the suspension. However, it?d be for the best if he serves it right away. The Indians have Friday off, so they can use a four-man rotation for the first five games of the season and then have Jimenez start the sixth game on April 11. Opening Day starter Justin Masterson would pitch Thursday and Tuesday in that scenario.

Rumblefish Catalog Grows To 1M Songs, Powers Soundtracks In Socialcam, Animoto, And More

friendly musicRumblefish, a service where consumers and businesses can easily license music for their online videos, says that its catalog now has more than 1 million songs, making it the largest licensing catalog of pre-cleared music. The idea is pretty simple: When you're posting a video on a site like YouTube, you might want to flesh it out by adding a soundtrack. However, most people don't have any idea how to license music legally, and even if they do, they probably don't have the money to pay for their favorite hits. So Rumblefish makes it easy to license music at affordable rates. On its site Friendly Music (which launched last year), you can search for songs based on things like mood, see how the song looks when played with the YouTube video of your choice. When you've found what you're looking for, you can instantly create a "Mash" with the synced up video, or download the song to edit into the video yourself. The licensing fees start at 99 cents.

Cruciferous vegetable consumption linked to improved breast cancer

"Breast cancer survivors can follow the general nutritional guidelines of eating vegetables daily and may consider increasing intake of cruciferous vegetables, such as greens, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli, as part of a healthy diet," said Sarah J. Nechuta, M.P.H., Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

After adjusting for demographics, clinical characteristics and lifestyle factors, the researchers found cruciferous vegetable intake during the first 36 months after breast cancer diagnosis was associated with a reduced risk for total mortality, breast cancer-specific mortality and recurrence in a dose?response pattern. Across increasing quartiles of cruciferous vegetable consumption, risk for total mortality decreased by 27 percent to 62 percent, risk for breast cancer-specific mortality decreased by 22 percent to 62 percent, and risk for recurrence decreased by 21 percent to 35 percent.

She suggested that future studies with direct measurements of bioactive compounds such as isothiocyanates and host factors that influence the effects of these biological compounds be conducted to better understand the association of cruciferous vegetable intake with breast cancer outcomes.

More information: Cruciferous Vegetable Intake After Diagnosis of Breast Cancer and Survival: a Report From the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study

Abstract
Background: Cruciferous vegetables are a major source of glucosinolate-derived bioactive compounds, such as isothiocyanates and indoles, which have been shown in animal studies and in vitro to inhibit cancer growth and progression. However, little is known regarding the role of cruciferous vegetables in breast cancer prognosis. Using resources from the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival, a large population-based prospective cohort study of Chinese breast cancer survivors, we evaluated the association of cruciferous vegetable consumption after cancer diagnosis and breast cancer outcomes with repeated dietary assessments after diagnosis.
Methods: Women with incident breast cancer aged 20-75 years were recruited within 6-months of diagnosis during 2002-2006. In-person baseline interviews collected detailed data on clinic characteristics, socio-demographics, and lifestyle factors. Medical records were used to verify clinical data. The cohort has been followed-up by a combination of in-person follow-up surveys and record linkage to the Shanghai Vital Statistics Registry. Cruciferous vegetable intake (g/day) was reassessed at 18- and 36-months. Cox regression models were used to derive hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations of cruciferous vegetables and breast cancer outcomes. Analyses include 4,886 women with stage I-IV breast cancer.
Results: After a median follow-up of 5.2 years, 587 deaths (496 breast cancer deaths) and 615 recurrences occurred. Cruciferous vegetable intake increased after diagnosis (mean (SD)=62.5 (44.5) at 6-months and 133.8 (93.3) at 36-months). After adjustment for socio-demographics, clinical characteristics including treatment and tumor characteristics, and lifestyle factors, cruciferous vegetable intake was associated with improved breast cancer survival in a dose-response pattern (P for trend Conclusion: Cruciferous vegetable intake after breast cancer diagnosis was associated with improved prognosis among Chinese women.

Mega Millions: Will lotteries and other gambling move to the Internet?

In December, the?US Department of Justice?announced that it was reversing its position that all Internet gambling was illegal, clearing the way for a potential boom in online gambling.?

For the millions of Americans who bought Mega Millions lottery tickets, the waiting is over.

The vast majority lost, as they knew they would in a gamble with mega-long odds (176 million to one). A handful won. The names of those whose tickets matched the ten winning numbers haven?t been announced yet, but state officials in Kansas, Illinois, and Maryland say winning tickets were sold there.

They?ll split what?s left of the $640 million jackpot (combined from 42 state lotteries) after Uncle Sam and state taxing authorities claim their share. Others whose $1 ticket matched some of the winning numbers could be paid lesser amounts ranging from $2 to $250,000 (where the odds still were 4 million to one).

States are the biggest winners. Lottery ticket buyers spent some $1.5 billion, most of which goes into state coffers.

The Monitor's View:?The odds and ends of Mega Millions jackpot lottery

Forty-three states now have lotteries, and some gambling advocates are pushing to legalize online lotteries and other forms of Internet gambling.

In December, the?US Department of Justice?announced that it was reversing its position that all Internet gambling was illegal, clearing the way for a potential boom in online gambling.?

States would have to approve such steps. At this point, only Nevada allows online poker there and the District of Columbia is moving in that direction as well. Minnesota has an online lottery. Other states are considering forms of online gambling ? which is practiced illegally via offshore and underground Internet sites.

Some experts warn that legalizing online gambling more broadly would increase the number of problem gamblers.

"If it's legalized, that would put electronic gambling ? the crack cocaine of gambling addiction ? on every work desk, [in] every living room, [on] every mobile phone," John Kindt, a professor of business and legal policy at the?University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign?and a senior editor of the US International Gambling Report, told Monitor correspondent Husna Haq.

"It's just bad social and economic policy," he said. "It's going to expand the social ills and taxpayer costs of addicted gambling and problem gambling. Desperate states will be getting in new lottery revenues at the expense of creating new addicted gamblers and problem gamblers."

Two million adults in the US are estimated to meet criteria for pathological gambling in a given year, according to the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).

Another 4-6 million would be considered problem gamblers, reports NCPG. That is, they do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling, but meet one of more of the criteria and are experiencing problems due to their gambling behavior.

Some three percent of Americans are problem gamblers, according to other estimates, a figure that?s higher for teenagers and college students.

Experts on gambling addiction warn that expanding online betting could make the problem worse.

?Online gambling websites are among the fastest growing and most profitable businesses in existence today,? according to the TechAddiction Information and Treatment Service in Nova Scotia, Canada. ?Compared to traditional land-based casinos, online gambling websites are able to operate at a fraction of the cost, do not require tangible materials or equipment (machines, tables, security cameras, a physical building, etc.), and do not need the hundreds of staff that would normally be required for a traditional casino.?

Meanwhile, millions of Americans continue to buy lottery tickets, dreaming of the next Mega Millions event.

Systemic Chinese hacking undermines U.S. R&D, innovation

Legendary spook Richard A. Clarke's gone on the record claiming Chinese hackers have infiltrated every major American corporation. He warns that the effects for American innovation--and especially corporate R&D--will be brutal.

Counterterrorism guru Richard A. Clarke has publicly admitted a bit of an open secret: Every major corporation in the United States has been infiltrated by Chinese hackers. Clarke, who now heads risk management firm Good Harbor Consulting, told journalist Ron Rosenbaum that Chinese hackers have been systematically stealing trade secrets from American firms on behalf of Chinese and foreign companies. While this has been known for a long time, Clarke's admission was made in shockingly blunt language.

In the interview, published in Smithsonian magazine, Clarke states that ?I?m about to say something that people think is an exaggeration, but I think the evidence is pretty strong--every major company in the United States has already been penetrated by China.? Clarke also alleges that Chinese hackers stole details about the manufacture of the F-35 fighter bomber, and that America's tech supply chain for chips, routers, and hardware may be infected with Chinese logic bombs, trapdoors, and Trojans waiting to be activated at a future date.

One of Clarke's greatest fears is a ?death of a thousand cuts? for American innovation, and of a situation where R&D secrets from large corporations are systematically stolen by Chinese and foreign hackers. Not coincidentally, Good Harbor boasts an extensive cybersecurity department providing boutique enterprise safety services.

Over the past year, as cyberwarfare has become more commonplace--which encompasses everything from Anonymous' crowdsourced DoS attacks to sophisticated American, Chinese, Israeli, and Russian cyberespionage--there has been an increased willingness by experts to go on the record about these sorts of things. Several months ago, Fast Company spoke with Adam Segal of the Council on Foreign Relations about ?The Chinese Way of Hacking.?
